What Are Previous Year Question Papers (PYQs)?
Previous year question papers, often called PYQs, are the actual question papers set in earlier sittings of an exam. For computer-based exams with many shifts, such as JEE Main, SSC CGL and RRB NTPC, each shift has its own paper, so one single year can produce dozens of papers. Most exam bodies now publish their papers or let candidates download them. NTA, for example, releases JEE Main session question papers together with candidates' recorded responses and the provisional answer key. UPSC publishes its question papers on its website after each exam. Where an exam body does not publish the paper, coaching institutes and aspirants reconstruct it from memory; these are called memory-based papers. SortMyExam labels every paper as official or memory-based so you always know what you are practising.
Why Solving PYQs Is the Fastest Way to Improve Your Score
PYQs are the closest thing to the real exam you can practise before exam day. They help in five fundamental ways:
A syllabus lists broad topics; PYQs show which specific topics get questions and how deep they go conceptually.
Many concepts return year after year in a new form, especially in NEET Biology, SSC General Awareness and UPSC Polity.
Mock tests can be artificially harder or easier than the exam. PYQs represent the true, unadulterated benchmark.
Solving a full paper under the original time limit shows exactly how long each section takes you under real pressure.
After solving 20 or 30 real past papers, the formatting, phrasing, and trap options no longer surprise you on the final test day.
PYQ PDF Download vs Attempting in CBT Mode
Every paper in our library is available in two ways. Use both at different stages of your preparation.
| What you need | PYQ PDF download | Attempt in CBT mode |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Offline revision, pen-and-paper exams | Computer-based exams, timed practice |
| Timer | Use your own stopwatch | Original exam timer, auto-submit countdown |
| Marking | Check manually with the answer key | Instant score with the exam's negative marking |
| Analysis | Manual calculation | Accuracy, time per question, weak chapters |
| Ranking | None | All India Rank among everyone who attempted |
| Solutions | Step-by-step solutions in the PDF | Step-by-step solutions immediately after submit |
| Works offline | Yes (saved on device) | No — requires internet connection |
For exams conducted on paper, such as UPSC Prelims, State PSC prelims, CLAT and NDA, start with the PDF and a printed OMR sheet. For CBT exams like JEE Main, SSC CGL, Bank PO, RRB NTPC, CAT and GATE, attempt the paper in CBT mode so that the interface feels completely natural on exam day.
CBT Shift-wise Question Papers Explained
Many computer-based exams run over several days with two or three shifts each day. Every shift gets a different paper of similar difficulty. A CBT shift wise question paper is the exact set of questions asked in one shift on one date. Why shift-wise papers matter:
- More real questions to practise: One JEE Main session runs two shifts a day across several days, giving 10–12 complete papers instead of just one.
- Difficulty comparison & normalisation:Some shifts are harder than others. Exam bodies such as NTA and SSC use normalisation formulas to adjust scores between shifts, so solving multiple shifts gives a truer picture of the exam's variance.
- Topic spread analysis: Comparing shifts shows which chapters appear in almost every single paper and which are rarely tested.
Official Exam Question Papers with Answer Key
Every paper in the library comes with a verified answer key. We categorize them into three clear types:
Published by the exam body after candidate objections are reviewed. Used wherever available.
Released immediately post-exam before challenge windows. Replaced when final key is out.
For memory-based papers, solved and double-checked by subject experts against standard books.
If you spot an answer you believe is erroneous, you can report it directly from the solution screen and our academic team will re-evaluate it.

How to Analyse Previous Year Papers: A 5-Step Method
Solving a paper is only half the work. The real score increase comes from systematic post-test analysis. Use this method for every PYQ:
PYQ Study Plan: When to Use Previous Year Papers
| Preparation Stage | How to Use PYQs | Target Benchmark |
|---|---|---|
| Starting out (Month 1) | Read 2–3 recent papers without solving to understand patterns and style | Understand exam depth |
| Learning chapters | After completing a chapter, solve all past PYQs from that specific topic | 80%+ chapter accuracy |
| Middle phase | One full PYQ paper every week in CBT mode | Steady score & rank rise |
| Last 6–8 weeks | 2–3 full papers per week, alternating PYQs and new mock tests | Peak speed and stamina |
| Final week | Re-attempt latest year's papers and review mistake notebook only | Confidence & zero new topics |
